Southwest Restaurants

Since we were following Route 66, we decided to try some of the restaurants that have been featured on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives.  They were all pretty good.  It was fun finding them, seeing what they looked like, and trying the food.

Amarillo-If you eat a 72 oz steak, potato, salad, and roll in less than 1 hour it's free

If you don't, it's $72.  None of us took the challenge but the food was good.

Santa Fe-We had grilled cheese with onions and spicy mustard.  Roadhouse and Vege Chop salads were great, too.

Santa Fe-Tecolote  We went for breakfast.  Huge pancakes

and great omelets

Santa Fe-Great Burgers!  Only outdoor seating

The car cost more than the real estate!!

Albuquerque-Really cheesy interior but

pretty good steaks

OKC This was Mama E's Waffles and Wings but it was not open for breakfast.  Oh well, we tried!

Going home 5/7 and 5/8/11

Sadly our trip has drawn to the end.  We have had a wonderful time seeing such diverse sites.  We can't wait to go back!!  Here are a few shots from the ride home.  I will have one more blog concerning restaurants from this trip.

We have approached Cline's Corner at 285 and US40 from every direction in the past year!

Cadi Car Henge in Amarillo

This is supposed to be the largest cross in the world, or so Texans say!

This water tower was built this way (Britten, TX)

Even though we lived in OKC, we never toured the capitol.

Sedona to Albuquerque 5/6/11

We were sorry to be leaving Sedona but had more places to explore!  Our first stop was Winslow, AZ, such a fine site to see!  The town was a booming tourist attraction (thanks to the Eagles), but the economy and gas prices have reduced traffic to a trickle.  We visited Petrified Forest National Park and the Painted Desert on our way to Albuquerque.  We also tried to get to Petroglyph National Monument but sadly it was already closed.

Sedona 5/3-5/5/11

We left the Grand Canyon on May 3 and decided that we would spend the next couple of days in Sedona.  The ride over was scenic as we stopped in Wupatki and Sunset Crater National Monuments and Oak Creek Canyon.  We spent the mornings touring around Sedona then lounged by the pool every afternoon as the weather was perfect-sunny and very warm.  One morning we traveled to the old mining town, Jerome, for lunch and a look around.  Sedona is beautiful, flanked by rock formations in every direction.  It is not a town for the weak of wallet, but it was a lot of fun to visit!  Be sure to take your wide angle lens and polarized filter.  I wish I had!!
